What did you make at the weekend?

So I gate crashed the LARP weapons workshop that Kieran arranged at Skian Mhor.  Not that I went to make LARP weapons, been there done that and never used them.  I just like to go and play with all the workshop toys that Sean has and to pick his brain on making things.  So what did I make, strangely only one thing, I decided that I want to get into making nice leather collars for the dogs. So I spent all weekend designing and making a dog collar for Tara.  I didn't quite get it finished at the workshop the colour and buckle were put on last night at home so if you were at the workshop this is how it looks now.

I also came a way with a pair of demon wings  (bought) and a set of horns that Sean made and I painted up and loads of ideas of other things to do.  I also have a mould to make greyhound shaped ornaments as well.

Am very impressed.
That's not the first piece of leatherwork you've done though, is it?

Regardless though, the flow and composition of the design are spot on, and it looks very well executed.

I have made a couple of things previous to this one was the moulded leather corset and matching satchel.

I also made a corset for my sister from garment leather but this is the first time I have tried to decorate leather.

I'm doubly impressed then. I remember the corset of course... I certainly wouldn't forget that in a hurry; in cold weather my jaw still aches from hitting the floor so hard! ;-)

I couldn't remember if it had any decoration of that sort in it though. What sort of tool do you use to do the "carving" (if that's the right word for it? The closest I've ever done to that sort of work was for some lino prints at at college. I was using one of those disposable craft knives with the red, plastic handles. Nearly sliced the tip of my finger off in the process.

There was no surface decoration on the corset I didn't have time. I was going to dye it autumn shades.

The design is more stamped into it rather than carved out. You get shaped tools and a plastic hammer, damp the leather and then hammer the design into it. Most of the work was done using a little domed tool to flatten the areas between the design.

Fascinating.

I must add that to the list of Things I Really Must Have a Go At!

Does Tara like her new collar? (Oh, and how's her leg doing, BTW?)

Tara seems to like it but only if she gets to wear her normal collar as well. As she has been with us since a pup she seems to associate wearing a collar as belonging with us. She is happy to have multiple collars on though.

Her leg is healing up very well and we are now doing the physiotherapy to build the muscles back up. Hopefully by the summer she should be allowed off lead to run again.
